"It is easier for a camel
to pass through the
eye of a needle,
than for a rich man
to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. "
When Jesus says this regarding the rich man who had come to him asking for eternal life,
he is referring to the sin-filled temptations encountered by the wealthy. The gate which stood in the wall of a city often contained an architecture known as "the eye-of-the-needle." The camel will always have difficulty negotiating the tight corners of the 'eye of the needle,' just as the rich man will always have difficulty avoiding the myriad temptations that come with wealth.

"Jaffa Gate" in modern Jerusalem is a similar example of this type of gate "architecture." |
